There is a particular kind of worry that comes with watching your child struggle with maths.
It usually starts quietly.
A few homework questions take longer than they should.
Then they start avoiding their maths book.
A test comes home with a mark that is lower than expected.
You ask if everything is okay.
“Yeah. I just don’t like maths.”
Then, eventually:
“I’m just bad at maths.”
And that sentence can be more concerning than the mark itself.
Because a disappointing test result can be fixed.
A child beginning to believe that they cannot do maths is a much bigger problem.
The problem isn’t always the mark
As a parent, it is natural to focus on results.
A 45% is worrying.
A 55% is frustrating.
A sudden drop from an A to a C gets your attention.
But the number on the page is often only the final symptom of something that has been developing underneath it.
Mathematics is cumulative.
Students don’t learn each topic in isolation and then completely forget it when they move on. New concepts continually depend on previous ones.
A student who never properly understands fractions can eventually struggle with algebra.
A student who is shaky with negative numbers can find equations unnecessarily difficult.
A student who memorises procedures without understanding why they work may cope with familiar textbook questions but fall apart when a test asks them to apply the same idea differently.
That means a small gap today can become a much larger problem later.
And this is where many parents find themselves asking:
“Why can’t my child just catch up?”
Sometimes they can.
But catching up becomes increasingly difficult when new learning keeps being built on top of the missing pieces.
“They understand it when I help them.”
This is one of the most common things parents tell themselves.
And it can be misleading.
You sit next to your child.
You explain the question.
You remind them which formula to use.
You do the first example together.
Suddenly, they get it.
You feel relieved.
“See? They understand it.”
Then the next night, the same problem happens again.
They don’t know where to start.
They ask you for help.
You explain it again.
Eventually, you’re sitting at the kitchen table doing maths together three nights a week.
And nobody is particularly happy.
Your child feels frustrated.
You feel frustrated.
And the maths homework has somehow become a source of tension between you.
This isn’t necessarily because you’re doing anything wrong.
It’s because knowing something when somebody is standing beside you is not the same as being able to retrieve, apply and explain it independently.
The goal of tutoring shouldn’t simply be to sit beside your child and give them answers.
The real goal should be to gradually make the student less dependent on help.
When “I hate maths” actually means something else
Parents often hear:
“I hate maths.”
But what does that actually mean?
Sometimes it means:
“I don’t understand what the teacher is doing.”
Sometimes:
“Everyone else seems to get it faster than me.”
Sometimes:
“I’m embarrassed to put my hand up.”
Sometimes:
“I’m scared I’m going to get the next question wrong.”
And sometimes:
“I’ve tried this before and failed, so I’d rather pretend I don’t care.”
That last one is particularly easy to miss.
A student can protect themselves from the embarrassment of failing by deciding they don’t care about the subject.
It’s psychologically easier to say:
“Maths is stupid.”
than:
“I really want to be good at maths, but I’m worried I’m not capable of it.”
This is why simply telling a struggling student to “work harder” often isn’t enough.
They need to experience success.
They need to understand what they’re doing.
And they need to rebuild the belief that effort can actually lead somewhere.
The homework battle is a warning sign
Think about what happens in your house on a normal school night.
Your child comes home.
They have homework.
They open their maths book.
They stare at the page.
They ask for help.
You try to explain it.
They say:
“That’s not how my teacher does it.”
You try again.
They become annoyed.
You become annoyed.
Twenty minutes later, you’re both frustrated and only three questions have been completed.
This can become a cycle.
And over time, the problem isn’t just mathematics anymore.
Maths starts affecting the relationship between parent and child.
Parents become the homework police.
Children start associating their parents with pressure.
The parent thinks:
“I’m only trying to help.”
The child thinks:
“Mum/Dad is always on my back about maths.”
Neither person actually wants that relationship.
And you shouldn’t have to become your child’s maths teacher.
Your role is to be their parent.
A good tutor can create some separation between family life and academic intervention.
That separation can be surprisingly valuable.
“But their school teacher says they’re doing fine.”
This is another reason parents hesitate.
Perhaps your child’s teacher hasn’t raised a major concern.
Perhaps their report says:
“Working at expected level.”
Perhaps they’re passing.
So you wonder whether tutoring is unnecessary.
But “passing” and “reaching their potential” are not necessarily the same thing.
A student can be technically keeping up while having weaknesses that will become more important later.
They might understand the basics but lack confidence.
They might get the correct answer but not understand why.
They might complete routine questions but struggle with unfamiliar problems.
They might be capable of achieving much more but have developed inefficient study habits.
And sometimes a student is genuinely doing fine.
That’s important too.
Tutoring shouldn’t be about convincing every parent that their child has a problem.
It should be about identifying what the student actually needs.
Sometimes that means intervention.
Sometimes it means extension.
Sometimes it means confidence-building.
Sometimes it means simply giving a capable student the structure and accountability they haven’t had before.
The biggest mistake parents make: waiting for a crisis
There is a natural instinct to wait.
“Let’s see how the next test goes.”
“Maybe they’ll catch up next term.”
“Year 9 is probably just difficult.”
“They’ll take it more seriously next year.”
“Once they get to VCE, we’ll get them a tutor.”
The problem with this approach is that the later you intervene, the more things you may need to fix simultaneously.
Imagine a student entering Year 11 with:
- weak algebra fundamentals
- inconsistent fraction skills
- poor equation-solving habits
- difficulty interpreting questions
- low confidence
- weak study habits
- little experience working independently
Now they are expected to learn much more advanced mathematics.
The tutor isn’t simply teaching the new material.
They’re trying to teach the new material while repairing years of accumulated gaps.
That is much harder.
And it can be much more stressful for the student.
Early support doesn’t mean assuming your child is going to fail.
It means refusing to wait until failure becomes the thing that finally gets everyone’s attention.
Your child may not need more worksheets
This is important.
When a student struggles with maths, the instinct is often:
More practice.
More worksheets.
More textbook questions.
More revision.
More homework.
But if a student doesn’t understand the underlying concept, giving them another 30 questions can simply give them 30 more opportunities to practise the wrong approach.
The first question should be:
“What exactly don’t they understand?”
Not:
“How many questions can we get them to complete?”
A good tutoring session should diagnose the problem before trying to fix it.
Is the issue conceptual understanding?
Is it algebraic fluency?
Is it reading the question?
Is it confidence?
Is it careless errors?
Is it time management?
Is it that they understand everything during the lesson but cannot retrieve it independently a week later?
These problems can look identical on a report card.
They aren’t.
What changes when a student finally has someone who understands where they’re stuck?
This is where personalised tutoring can make a meaningful difference.
Not because a tutor possesses some magical explanation that a classroom teacher doesn’t.
Teachers work with groups of students.
A tutor can spend an entire session focused on one student’s particular misunderstanding.
Imagine your child is struggling with simultaneous equations.
Instead of simply saying:
“Here’s how you solve simultaneous equations.”
A tutor can ask:
“Show me how you’d start this.”
And watch.
Maybe the student understands substitution but doesn’t know when to use it.
Maybe they don’t understand what an equation actually represents.
Maybe they make a sign error every time they rearrange an equation.
Maybe they know the process but panic when the numbers look unfamiliar.
Maybe the problem isn’t simultaneous equations at all.
That’s the difference between teaching the topic and teaching the student.
The goal isn’t just a better maths mark
Of course, marks matter.
Parents want their children to achieve good results.
Students want to feel proud of their work.
And strong results can matter for future subject choices and pathways.
But the deeper goal is independence.
You want your child to open a maths question and think:
“I know what this is asking me.”
Then:
“I know where to start.”
Then:
“If that approach doesn’t work, I’ll try something else.”
And finally:
“I can check whether my answer makes sense.”
That’s a very different student from one who immediately says:
“I can’t do this.”
The goal of mathematics education isn’t simply for students to memorise procedures.
It is to develop students who can reason, solve problems and use mathematics confidently.
That’s what tutoring should ultimately be working towards.
Not dependence on a tutor.
Dependence on the student’s own mathematical thinking.
When should a parent seriously consider tutoring?
You don’t need to wait for a disastrous report card.
Consider getting additional support if you are noticing several of these patterns.
1. Your child consistently avoids maths
They put it off.
They find excuses.
They suddenly need a snack whenever maths homework appears.
That avoidance may be telling you something.
2. Homework regularly becomes an argument
If maths is repeatedly creating conflict at home, bringing in another person can remove the parent-child dynamic from the situation.
3. Your child says they’re “bad at maths”
Don’t automatically dismiss this as teenage complaining.
Ask what they mean.
What specifically do they find difficult?
When did they start feeling this way?
4. Their results are falling
Especially if the decline is persistent rather than a single bad assessment.
5. They understand examples but can’t complete questions independently
This is one of the clearest signs that they may need help developing independent problem-solving skills.
6. They have significant gaps in earlier topics
If current work keeps exposing weaknesses in fractions, algebra, arithmetic or other foundations, repairing those gaps can be more productive than simply pushing forward.
7. They’re approaching an important transition
Moving into more demanding mathematics can expose weaknesses that were previously manageable.
Getting support before the transition can be considerably less stressful than trying to repair everything afterwards.
And what if your child is already doing well?
Tutoring isn’t only for students who are failing.
Some students are capable of much more than their current results suggest.
Perhaps they’re getting 75% but want to reach the 90s.
Perhaps they understand the work but struggle with exam technique.
Perhaps they want to take a more challenging mathematics subject.
Perhaps they’re preparing for VCE and want to build their foundations before the workload increases.
In these situations, tutoring can be about extension rather than remediation.
The question isn’t always:
“How do we stop them falling behind?”
It can also be:
“How far could they go if they had the right support?”
You don’t have to wait until Year 11
One of the most expensive mistakes in education isn’t necessarily paying for tutoring.
It can be waiting until the problem has become expensive to solve.
By Year 11, a student may be dealing with considerably more demanding content while simultaneously trying to repair foundations.
By then, the pressure can be enormous.
The better time to address a weakness is usually when it is still manageable.
Not when your child is sitting in front of a VCE exam saying:
“I don’t know how to do any of this.”
Your child doesn’t need to become a “maths person”
They don’t need to love mathematics.
They don’t need to be naturally gifted.
They don’t need to get every question right.
But they should be able to approach mathematics without immediately believing that failure is inevitable.
That confidence doesn’t come from telling a student:
“You’re good at maths.”
It comes from giving them experiences where they can say:
“I didn’t understand that before.”
“Now I do.”
“I got that one wrong.”
“I figured out why.”
“Let me try another one.”
That is how confidence is built.
If you’re wondering whether your child needs a maths tutor…
You probably don’t need another generic worksheet.
You probably don’t need somebody to tell your child to “try harder”.
And you probably don’t need to spend another three hours at the kitchen table arguing over homework.
What you need first is clarity.
Where is your child actually struggling?
What concepts are missing?
What is causing the lack of confidence?
Are they genuinely behind, or simply lacking the right strategy?
And what would it take to get them working independently again?
That’s where a good maths tutor can help.
Not by doing the maths for your child.
Not by giving them endless worksheets.
And not by creating another adult they have to answer to.
But by sitting down with them, finding the gaps, explaining the mathematics in a way that makes sense to them, and gradually helping them become confident enough to do it themselves.
Because the goal isn’t simply to get through the next maths test.
It’s to make sure your child doesn’t spend the next several years believing they’re bad at maths.
